What Axle Length Should be Picked to Match Width of Tow Vehicle Wheels with Trailer Wheels

Question:

I have a jeep with 76inch width tires. The trailer that I am building is 72Lx52W. It leaves me 12inch on both sides. I want the trailer tires to be the same width has the jeep. So how do you determine the length of the axel? I also want to know if the tires on the jeep and trailer should be the same size. I have 37x12.5x17 tires and wheels on the jeep. Im planning on putting 33x10.5x15 tires and wheels on the trailer.

You will need to take the wheels off of your Jeep and measure from hub face to hub face. That dimension is the length of axle you should order for your trailer so that the sets of wheels from the trailer and vehicle will stick out the same distance.

As long as the wheels you plan to install on the trailer have the same offset as the wheels of your jeep they will be the same width apart. It also sounds like this is an off-road trailer. Normally we recommend only ST rated trailer tire for trailers. But since your trailer doesn't to be being built for the highway you would be fine.
