Trailer Brakes Kept Locking Up, Now the Towing Vehicle Vibrates

Question:

Hello, What kind of damage can we expect to be informed of on our tow vehicle that pulled a goose neck trailer for about 5 miles where the brakes on the trailer kept locking up? The wires were hooked up crossed. We now have a vibration - you can feel in steering wheel. I know this is vague - but with your years of experience Im sure you can come up with a list of things - thanks for your help

It sounds like because of the wheels locking up, there was significant wear on the tires of the trailer and/or the tow vehicle. This is called cupping/scalloping and creates flat spots on the tires. This can cause the vibration and vehicle shaking at certain speeds. The worse it gets, the more the shaking will occur at various speeds. Apart from being annoying, this is quite unsafe, as you have less traction on the tires, or, in other words, less surface area on the tire gripping the road.

This is usually a result of a weak or failing suspension (like your shocks are worn and you need new ones). But in this case, the flat spots would have been caused by the brakes locking up. I doubt, since you only went that short distance, that you bent an axle or worse, but you should take both vehicles to their respective dealers to check them out. On the trailer, they will need to check the hubs and drums, pads, and magnets, in addition to the tires. On the tow vehicle they will need to check the tires, axles, and the frame (to check for any bending or twisting that may have occurred).
