Trailer Bumps 2012 GMC Sierra 1500 When Coming to a Stop
Question:
I have a 2012 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT CC 5.3L All Terrain with max tow package. I have the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 installed. When steadily applying the brakes of my truck, the truck and trailer stop with no problems. However, on a few occasions I get this Trailer Bumpinch where the trailer feels likes it pushes or bumps the truck. Ive tried increasing the power of the P3, but that only causes the trailer to lock its wheels. What is causing this bump?

You didn't mention the type of trailer you have but I can cover the basics for different types. If you have a 5th wheel trailer then what you are experiencing is called chucking and it is normal for a 5th wheel trailer. It is caused by a slight gap between the trailer king pin and the hitch jaws when the trailer is coupled.
To help with that issue you can replace the pin box on the trailer with an air ride pin box. I would need to know the manufacturer and model of the pin box to determine if there is one that will fit. This info is usually on a sticker or plate on the pin box. If there isn't an air ride pin box for the trailer then another option is a cushioned 5th wheel hitch such as the Curt A20, # C16541.
If you have a bumper pull trailer then it is probably slop between the ball mount and hitch. Using an anti-rattle device such as # MPG908 can take out some of that movement. It is also possible to get some movement if you are using a smaller ball than what is required by the trailer coupler. This is also dangerous so check the trailer coupler for the ball size it requires and make sure that is what you are using.
Beyond that you would want to inspect the trailer to check for anything loose at the coupler and inspect the suspension to see if anything is worn or broken and replace as needed.
I have not heard of this issue on a gooseneck trailer but like a bumper pull trailer, if the ball is too small there would be too much movement.
I do not think the problem is the brake controller but you will want to check the settings just to be safe. You may have the boost on or, if not, it might be needed.
