Can Hitch Extender Be Used On 2014 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited With Spare Tire For Cargo Carrier

Question:

I have a 2014 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon. The spare tire is large and sticks out away from the back. My question is how will it fit with the spare tire on the back? In the video it appears to fit rather close to the back of the vehicle. Will I need a hitch extension or what? Thank you for any help you can provide.

When you intend to install any accessory in the hitch on the back of your 2014 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, you will need to consider the spare tire and whether it will interfere with the items you want to use. You can take a measurement to see what will work for you.

You will need a tape measure and a straight edge like a yardstick or a dowel. Place the straight edge vertically against the back of the spare tire, letting it extend below the trailer hitch receiver opening. Then measure from the center of the hitch pin to the straight edge. This will give you the distance you need to clear the spare tire. I have attached a helpful article that explains how to take this measurement for clearance.

For the Carpod Walled Cargo Carrier w/ Lockable Lid, part # M2200-01-02, you will need more than 4-1/2 inches of clearance from the center of the hitch pin to make sure it will work. This cargo carrier weighs 54 lbs.

If you decide you want to use an extender like part # C45796, it will reduce the weight capacity of the hitch you have installed on your Wrangler. And you need to consider the weight of the cargo carrier along with any cargo you want to carry.

The highest rated trailer hitches we offer for your Unlimited has a weight capacity of 400 lbs. If an extender is used you cut that capacity to 200 lbs. Then deduct the 54 lbs for the carrier and you can haul a total of about 145 lbs.

You will also want to check the owner's manual or with your dealership to see what the towing weight and tongue weight capacity is for your Jeep.
