Fifth Wheel Towing Setup Recommendation for 1989 32 ft. Nu-Wa Hitchhiker 5th Wheel

Question:

Hi experts, I have a Hitchhiker 31RL 5er w/ a 33foot O.A. Lgth. and dry wt. 8550 Lbs GVWR of 11,000 Lbs. and plan to buy 3/4 ton Crew Cab P/U truck w/ 6.5foot box and I have a couple of questions 1. Will I need a Revolution Pin Box set up to assure I do not hit the cab of the truck when backing up or turning tight Radius and 2. What Reese hitch set up should I get installed with my truck with the specs given above? Thanks in advance experts!

Since your truck has a short bed you have two options to give you enough clearance to make tight turns with your towing setup. You can go with a Reese Revolution or Sidewinder pin box replacement (both products are the same thing, just different names), which is the preferred method since your trailer will track better behind your truck and will be easier to back up, plus it won't require you to get out of your truck every time you get to a parking lot so you can make tight maneuvers.

Or you can install a slider hitch in the bed of your truck. This will allow you to slide the hitch back when you get to parking lots so that you can make tight maneuvers without damaging the cab of your truck with the nose of your trailer.

Sidewinders are pin box specific so you will first need to know what pin box you have know in order to pick out the correct one.

There should be a sticker or a stamping on the OEM pin box of the trailer that will list the pin box number that is on the trailer.

Once you figure out which pin box you have you can check the FAQ I attached that has a chart that shows the correct Sidewinder to get based on which pin box you have.

If you cannot find the number you can use the measurements of the bolt holes of the pin box to determine which one you have. I attached an FAQ on how to do this for you to check out also.

Either way you will need a custom rail kit for the hitch to install into. That will depend on the year/make/model of the truck you end up going with so I can't recommend anything yet.

If you go with a Reese Revolution you would want a stationary hitch like # RP30047, and then for a similar slider hitch you would want the # RP30075.

I would highly recommend the Reese Revolution as that will give you the best towing experience.
