Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 2014 Ford F-150 STX Behind a Motor Home
Question:
I am planning on installing a Roadmaster Base Plate #495-1A on a 2014 Ford F150 stx 4x4 with 5.0L V8 FFV Engine to flat tow behind a class a motor. I already own a Roadmaster Falcon 5250 tow bar that I used on my last tow vehicle. Will this tow bar and these base plates be compatible or do I need any adapters?

Helpful Expert Reply:
The Roadmaster Falcon 5350 tow bar will work with the XL base plates # 495-1A on your 2014 Ford F-150 STX. No adapter will be needed. But this tow bar is rated for a maximum of 5,000 pounds. If your truck is heavier then you will need to use a different tow bar.
The Falcon 2, # RM-520, is rated for 6,000 pounds. The Blackhawk 2, # RM-422, is rated for 10,000 pounds.
In addition to the tow bar and the base plates you will also need safety cables if you do not have some already. For 7,500 pound rated cables use # BX88196. For 6,000 pound cables use # RM-643. And for 10,000 pound rated cables use # BX88197.
For lighting you could use a simple magnetic kit such as # RM-2120. Or for a more permanent solution you can use diode kit # RM-154.
And finally, most states now require supplemental braking on the vehicle being flat towed. One of the easiest systems to set up and use is the Even Brake proportional system # RM-9400. It will apply the truck brakes in proportion to how much the tow vehicle is braking. This is the easiest way to stop and it reduces wear and tear on both vehicles.
Be sure to consult your F-150 owners manual for specific information on flat towing the vehicle. I have also included some helpful links to our series of help articles on flat towing for you.
