It sounds like the shank portion of your weight distribution system, a part like Reese # RP3215 that holds the head assembly and that slides into your hitch receiver tube, is the part of your weight distribution system that was damaged when your vehicle was rear-ended.

Since I could find no purchase history for you here at etrailer I can only assume you have a ProSeries brand hitch since this is what you looked at on the site. My contact there could not confirm the part reference you gave, 2204-02-38, as one of their shanks.

The shank part number should appear either on a sticker or be cast into the shank itself. Shank part numbers are usually 5- or 6-digit numbers. If you can find the part number and confirm the brand of your system I can try to help find a replacement shank.

However, I want to express a caution. It is entirely possible for there to be hidden damage to the other parts of your weight distribution system, or to your hitch receiver, that is not evident from visual inspection. I suggest you take the vehicle and system to a qualified trailer shop to ensure there is nothing else damaged that could lead to safety issues.
