Trailer Brake Lights Flickering when Using the Brake Controllers Manual Overide On a 1995 Ford F-150

Question:

I installed a Tekonsha Prodigy Brake controller on a 1995 Ford F150. When I use the manual override with no brake pedal applied from tow vehicle, the trailer brake lights flicker. Could this be back feed through the stop light wire? Or maybe a short between the Blue wire and...?

Your problem sounds like it may be an issue with a short between the blue wire and the stop light wire. If this is the case there is most likely some corrosion in the trailer connector on the truck or trailer end or there is a ground issue somewhere. Moisture in the connector can also cause this issue.

To make sure that the controller is not the problem you can test it with a voltmeter. Connect the tester between the red and white wires on the brake controller and then activate the manual override lever. There should be no voltage reading. If there is a voltage reading then you will need to cut the red wire 4-6 inches from the back of the brake controller and perform the same test again. If at this point there is no voltage between the red and white wire, the problem is on the vehicle or trailer. If there is voltage between the red and white wire after cutting the red wire the problem is within the brake controller.
