Catalytic Converter Options for a 1998 Ford Explorer with 4.0 Liter Motor

Question:

I have a 1998 Ford Explorer with a 4.0 engine. Im not sure which converter I need because I dont know if I need the California emissions model or not. How can I tell? Can you tell by the VIN number? Also do I need universal fit or direct fit? Thank you!

If you live in California you would need to have the CARB compliant catalytic converter. If you live in any other state you can use the 49 state converters.

For a California model on a 1998 Ford Explorer with the X designation in the VIN use # MF447206. Check the 8th digit of the VIN.

For 49 state converters use # MF23315 for direct fit and E designation. Use # MF23313 for direct fit with X designation.

Or you can use universal converter # MF99005HM for E designation or # MF99006HM for X designation.

Universal fit converters may require some additional components shops that a muffler shop could take care of for you.
