Hitch adapters like the Brophy # HTAD are convenient for joining different sizes of hitch receiver and accessory, such as your 2-inch Thule bike rack in your 1-1/4-inch hitch. But the dark side of adapters is that they all cause you to lose 50-percent of your hitch's capacity. The loss of capacity results from the change in the geometry of the system - the adapter/extender allows much more leverage to be applied on the hitch tube.

A quick search online for a copy of the owners manual states that the 2001 Pontiac Sunfire can be flat towed without modification if you have a four-speed automatic or a five-speed manual transaxle.
