All the hitches available for the Toyota Matrix are either Class I or II which use a 1-1/4 inch receiver tube. This being said, there's still options available that might work for you.
For the best capacity, I'd recommend the Curt Class II hitch, part # C12013 which has a 250lb tongue weight capacity and a 2500lb towing capacity. For non trailer loads like bike racks and cargo carriers, the hitch warranty stipulates that a stabilizing strap like part # 18050 should be used.

There are no 2 inch hitches available for a 2009 Toyota Matrix, however we do have a solution for you. We have 1-1/4 inch hitches for your Matrix and a nice adapter for making your 2 inch bike rack work with 1-1/4 inch receivers.

All of the hitches for the 2006 Toyota Matrix XR are going to have about the same ground clearance. The best one in my opinion though is the Draw Tite part # 24812 as it does not require a stabilizer strap when carrying a non-supported load like a bike rack like the Curt hitch does.
Since this hitch requires total removal of the rear fascia on the XR models that means the hitch would sit up the highest of the ones available. view full answer...
You are definitely on the right track when it comes to not wanting to use an adapter for your bike rack. The only trailer hitches that are a confirmed fit for your 2004 Toyota Matrix have 1-1/4" receivers but if you let me know what bike rack you have I can check to see if there is an adapter that was made specifically for your bike rack (provided that we carry your bike rack).
