- As you mentioned, if you have difficulty getting the unit to pair with the remote, you can simply use an American vehicle equipped with a 7-way trailer connector to pair the unit to the remote, then plug the trailer and remote in to your Mercedes. If one isn't available, you can also use a tester, part # C73NR.

In regards to its use, the controller can be left plugged in as it will go into sleep mode after 15 minutes of not being used. You can certainly unplug it if you like, but leaving it plugged in will not drain the battery so you definitely do not have to do that if you don't like.
