As you mentioned, if you have difficulty getting the unit to pair with the remote, you can simply use an American vehicle equipped with a 7-way trailer connector to pair the unit to the remote, then plug the trailer and remote in to your Mercedes. In order to pair up correctly, be sure to follow the pairing procedure shown in the linked instructions exactly.
