Hey Jeff,
SumoSprings do not need to be touching the axle when unloaded. Having a bit of a gap while unloaded is totally normal. Giving your axle a bit of wiggle room before engaging the jounce spring will give you a bit more of a comfortable ride. As you hit bumps in the road the springs will contact the axle and will have a softer progression instead of feeling like you're hitting a boulder in the road because their too close and already compressing.
