Wiring Your Towed Car with Hopkins

Wiring your car for flat towing has never been easier. No more testing wires or splicing into your electrical system. No need to painstakingly position multiple diodes beneath your vehicle. No worries about voiding your warranty. With this custom-fit towed vehicle wiring kit from Hopkins, all you have to do is plug the harness into your vehicle's existing wiring, which is located behind your car's tail light assemblies. No cutting, tapping, or splicing is required.

After plugging in the wiring harness, use the included bracket to mount the 4-way flat connector at the front of your towed car. An extension loop (sold separately) is required to connect your towed car to your RV.

Do You Need a Brake Light Relay?

Because your vehicle has a combined lighting system - wherein the brake signals and the turn signals are carried on a single wire - a brake light relay (RM-88400 - sold separately) may be required if you use a supplemental braking system with your towing setup. A supplemental braking system depresses the brake pedal in your towed car every time you apply the brakes in your RV. So, if your towed car's brake lights illuminate when the brake pedal is pressed and the engine is off - as is the case when towing - then you need to install a relay to ensure that the lights on your towed car always act in accordance with the signals sent by your RV via the wiring harness. Without a relay, the brake signal from your towed car will override the turn signal sent by your RV when you slow down to make turns, creating a potential hazard.

Hello everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a look at the Hopkins custom taillight wiring kit for towed vehicles. Now this is a custom fit part. It is designed to fit the 2021 and newer Ford F-250 and F-350 Super Duty trucks. And on a custom fit part like this, I do like to recommend for you to go to our website, use the fit guide, put in your year and model vehicle, and it'll show if this will work for your application. Now this kit here will let you wire your vehicle to accept your RV's tail brake and turn signal lights for flat towing.

Provides this four-way flat plug at the front of your towed vehicle to connect to the motor home. And this kit does plug in quickly and easily. There's no cutting or splicing of wires. All you have to do is make your connection points right here and those connection points are located on your vehicle on the right rear frame. You just unplug it, plug this into place.

This will prevent electrical feedback to safeguard your towed car's electrical system. This weatherproof box right here helps keep the built-in diodes protected. And what's nice with this system is it won't interfere with your electrical system when the towed car is not hooked up to the RV. As we mentioned, it's custom design for your vehicle. It does include everything laid out here on the table.

It includes a complete wiring harness with the four-way, the four-way mounting bracket with the hardware, a four-way dust cover, some terminal grease, and then some cable ties to take up any slack in the wiring. Now one note I do wanna mention is a brake light relay may be required if this is used with a supplemental braking system. That brake light relay, we do sell separately on our website. It's part number RMM-88400. But just to briefly go through how this hooks up, as we mentioned, you'll go to your connection points on the right rear frame, unplug it and plug in these connectors.

And then what you'll do is take this box here, it's sort of got a little weight to it so you don't want it bouncing around. And then you can install it to a nice flat surface. They do give you some extra cable ties to run through these little handles here to hold it into place. Run this length of wire up to the front of your vehicle. Have your four-way right there. And on your notice on your four-way, it has a length of white wire with an eyelet on it that's for ground. So you do want to connect that to a good clean ground that's nearby. If there isn't one, they do give you a grounding screw that you can make your own ground. And then once you give it up to the front, they do include this nice dust cover that you can slip right on here. There you go. Stretch it right on there and it'll stay in place just like that. And then what's nice is when you're not plugged into your RV, you can just put this over the terminals like that. It protects them from any damage or from the elements. And then we mentioned it comes with this nice bracket that'll hold your four way with your cap attached. You just put it in the little cutouts there, close that over it, and then using the screws, you can attach that to your vehicle. And then you have the cover like we've mentioned, that would go over there and protect them. And in the terminal grease you'll wanna put on any of your electrical connections you make, put some grease on there to protect it. But that's gonna do it for the review on this Hopkins custom tail light wiring kit for towed vehicles.
