Video Transcript for Gooseneck Trailer Hitch Installation - 2009 Dodge Ram

All right, today in this 2009 Dodge Ram Pickup 2500 Series we're going to install part number C60660. This is the Curt EZr Double Lock Gooseneck Installation Kit. Let's take a quick look into the operation of the hitch. We pull it out and then twist it towards the front of the truck. You can see how it will lock into place. All right, now we know how the locking pins work, let's go ahead and install the ball.

We put the ball into place and we lock it down and the balls will not move. Pull it open, lock it open, flip the ball over and it will sink in all the way and we lock it down and then we can put our cover on top the hitch. To start off our install we need to get our truck ready. To do that we'll go ahead and get the spare tire out of the way and also lower our exhaust. Now, we're going to remove the rubber hangers from the exhaust and the bumper all the way up towards the cab. This will give us more working room to install the hitch.

Also, to make things easier to see we also remove the tires and wheels in the back axle. What's next it would be good idea to do a test fit with the cross arms to see if we have to remove any materials so we can install it. Usually the bottom edge of a bed will be in the way. We'll make a notch if we have to. All right, our next step is to go ahead and install a couple of U bolts. We'll install these forward of the bump stop. Now the passenger's side is going to be easy.

Our driver's side we have to sneak it behind some brake lines and some wiring. There's a holder for a wiring so we'll go ahead and pry that out of the way and then we can go ahead and slip our U bolt into place. Before we install our hitch we will make sure that the chrome ring is removed from the hitch and then we'll put our center guide on top of the hitch. The guide will simply sit in place and you also want to take note, make sure which side you want the handle to go out of. In this case we're going to route ours out the driver's side and you can see the guide where the handle will eventually go through. To start off we'll take our forward crossbar and rotate it up and also push it all the way back.

That will hold it up for us. Then we'll take a carriage bolt and a block and install it from the inside to the outside. We want our threads pointing towards the center section of the hitch. With one bolt in place we'll go ahead and take the hitch and put it up there and then install a flange nut. Then we'll repeat the same process for the 4 remaining holes on that rail. Next, we'll go ahead and move onto the other rail. We'll slide it up into position and from the inside out we'll install our bolts. No blocks are involved since the carriage bolt fits into the square and the hitch and we'll put the flange nut on the other side. We'll run down everything finger tight. All right, next up is pre assembly of our frame brackets. There are 2 pieces that we need to put together. I'll be working on the driver's side for now. We'll go ahead and mark out 2/6 holes. One is for 2-wheel drive vehicles and one is for 4x4 vehicles. Ours is a 4x so we'll go ahead and set up the bracket appropriate. We will install a carriage bolt from underneath, put our second bracket on top and then put a flange nut on there. We will do this on both holes. Now we'll just get this finger tight just enough to hold it together. All right, one more thing to get our truck ready, if we have to temporarily remove the inaudible 0:03:55 stop there are 2 bolts in the bottom, it's a good idea to go ahead and spray down some lubricant and then remove. Now the stop will go back into place but it will get new hardware. With our frame bracket assembled we'll go ahead and put it onto the side of the frame of the truck. We'll line up a first U bolt to hold it in place then attach a flange nut top and bottom. All right, next we'll go ahead and install our second U bolt. This will go on on the driver's side frame rail. When we install on the driver's side frame rail there's a wire harness behind the frame. We'll loosen that up as well to work our U bolt into place. Now between the frame bracket and the frame is a spacer block that goes in between. Then we'll go ahead with our U bolt through the frame bracket and then fasten it with a flange nut top and bottom. Now we'll go to the bottom of the frame bracket. We'll go ahead and reinstall the bump stop with our new hardware. We'll be using 2 new 10-mm bolts and conical tooth washers. Now when you install the conical tooth washers you always want to make sure that the teeth in the washers are always facing towards the hitch. All right, now we'll go ahead and attach the driving plate to the cross arms. We'll install a block with a 5/8 square hole and our 5/8 carriage bolt. Run those 2 together then we run it through the frame bracket and then through the crossbar and then a flange nut on the other side. We'll do this to each crossbar. We're done with our driver's side for now. Now we'll go over to the passenger's side and repeat it one more time. At this point then we'll go ahead and tight and torque the hitch itself to the cross arms. Then we'll go ahead and tight and torque the side plate brackets to the truck frame. This will be the brackets that go underneath the very bottom by a inaudible 0:06:16 stop and 3/4 inch nuts on the side. Then we'll go onto the U bolts. Then we'll go ahead and tighten and torque the side plates down to the cross arms. Now we can go ahead and start making the holes or hitch in our U bolts. To start off, we'll go ahead and drill our center hole for our hitch. We'll use the 3/16 drill bit and use the guide that's in the hitch to drill through the bed. Now with the marks we can drill for the holes for our U bolts. We'll use a 5/8 drill bit to mark the center of our holes. Then we'll follow up with a 3/16 drill bit. With our holes drilled out from the bottom we can go up to the top. We'll go ahead and drill our U bolt holes first with a 5/8 drill bit. Now this will be a bit of a tight fit so it's a good idea to widen up the hole a little bit so you can install the U bolts. Now for our hole saw we need to turn our pilot hole into a quarter inch pilot hole and then inaudible 0:07:41 4-inch hole saw. Just be careful to go through the metal and try not to hit the hitch underneath. With our hole drilled out we'll go ahead and remove our guide. Now our kit also comes with a bit of an edging that goes around our cut out holes. We'll go ahead and install that around the edge . After that we can go ahead and install our chrome ring. There are only 3 bolts to install. All right, we're done with the top of the bed, let's go back underneath and we'll go ahead and install a hardware for our U bolts. Our U bolts will be a flat washer, a spring, another flat washer and then a lock nut. Once we have all this assembled we'll go ahead and tighten it down. We just need to run lock nuts up about 2 or 3 threads pass and that's all we need. We'll go ahead and put our locking pins into the hitch, this is the part that holds the ball in place. Next we'll work on the handle. Let's do some test fits first. If you're going to make a hole in the bed at the very edge. In our test fitting we found out that we drilled our hole up to 5/8 inch and then we cut out the bottom and then we we're able to install our handle. It works freely after that. Then we'll slide in our handle part way. Then our handle we'll get a flat washer, a spring and another flat washer before it goes into the double pins. Then we'll line up the holes and the double pin with our handle then install our nut and bolt. We'll go ahead and put our locking pins into the hitch then let it simply snug it down and we're good to go. All right, to reinstall our exhaust we'll go ahead and use our strap to push it back in it's original position. You could see that the exhaust is pretty close to the hitch so we use a new rubber hanger that comes with the kit to help space the exhaust back down. Then we'll continue on it reinstalling our factory rubber hangers. All right, everything complete let's go ahead and place our tire back up and our 2 tires and wheels. That will finish it for part number C60660. This is the Curt EZr Double Lock Gooseneck Installation Kit on our 2009 Dodge Ram Pickup 2500 Series. .
