Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located in your rear cargo area on the driver's side and passenger's side. You will have to remove the jack and some interior paneling to access this harness. Once you've plugged in the connector, run the red hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way flat connector will be stowed in your rear cargo area.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Video Transcript for Hopkins Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring - Trailer Hitch Wiring - HM11143585 Review

Today we're going to take a look at the Hopkins Plug-In Simple Wiring Harness with the four-way flat trailer connector. Now, this is a custom fit part. It is designed to fit the 2012 and newer Nissan NV1500, 2500, and 3500 vans. Now, on a custom fit part, I always like to recommend for you to go to our website, use our fit guide, put in your year model vehicle, and it will show you if this will work for your application. Now, this harness will provide this four-way flat trailer connector at the back of your vehicle to power your trailer single lights. This is compatible with five pole, six pole, and seven pole adapters that we do sell separately. This will connect very quickly and easily.

There's no cutting or splicing wires. Basically, you just locate your connection points which are in the rear cargo area behind the tail lights, plug in these connectors right here, one on each side, ground your white wire, run you power wire to your vehicle's battery, and you'll be all ready to go. Now, it does include this tail light converter, the black box right here. This is to ensure that your vehicles wiring will match that of your trailer. This is a power module. That's why we'll connect it directly to the battery, and that's to avoid overloading your vehicles electrical system.

They do use protective connection terminals to help resist corrosion. Now, it does come with this nice dust cover for the four-way. What's nice about that is you can just attach this to the four-way plug. When you're not plugged into your trailer, and you can leave this on there if you like, but when your not plugged in, just take your dust cap, put it over the terminals, and that will protect them from any damage or from the elements. It comes with everything shown here on the table. Nice set of detailed instructions that describe how to install everything. A few specs on this.

The maximum amperage on the stop and turn light circuits is 4.2 amps per circuits. On the tail light circuits, it's 7.5 amps. Just briefly how this all installs. What you want to do is go to the rear again, to the rear cargo area, and you'll need to access behind your tail lights. You want to start on the driver side.

You'll take this connector here that has the yellow wire in it, and that will connect onto the driver side. Unplug your harness from the tail lights, plug this right in, and you're set on that side. Then you'll take this other connector that has this length of green wire. That's for the passenger side. You'll run this wire all the way over to the passenger side. Then go ahead and plug this in same way behind the passenger side tail light. Then what you want to do is this converter box right here, you do want to attach this to a nice flat surface so it doesn't bounce around. You can use the included cable ties if you need to attach that down. Then you'll have two wires left, the white wire and a red wire. Now, the white wire has the eyelid on it. That's for a connect to a good clean ground. If there's one nearby, you can use that. If not, they do give you a grounding screw that you can make your own ground. Then the last wire with the butt connector on is the red power wire. That needs to run to your vehicle's battery. They give you this length of wire to run that up to your vehicle's battery. Attach one end of the length of wire to the red wire coming out of the converter, run this wire all the way up to the vehicle's battery. Now, you don't want to connect that directly to the battery. You want to run it through this inline fuse holder first. Take the fuse holder, put the butt connector in onto that wire just like that. Then this eyelid over here on the inline fuse holder will connect to your vehicle's battery. You'll go ahead and connect that. Then just pop open the cap, take your included 15 amp fuse, pope it right into your fuse holder, cover it up, and you'll be all ready to go. Now, again, they include these extra cable ties for attaching your power converter down or even holding up any of this wire if it's hanging down. They give you this nice packet of terminal grease which is a dielectric grease. Now, you do want to use that any time you make any electrical connections. You want to put some of that on all your electrical connections before you connect them, and even put them on your four-way when you plug into your trailer because that will help it resist corrosion. That should do it for the review on the Hopkins Plug-In Simple Wiring Harness with the four-way flat trailer connector.

See what our Experts say about this Hopkins Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring

  • Recommended Wiring Harness for 2014 Nissan NV 3500 Passenger Van
The Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # C56148 is a confirmed fit for the Nissan NV 1500, 2500, and 3500 models between 2012 and 2020. There is not a separate fit for the cargo models from the passenger models because they utilize the same wiring. You can alternatively use # 118553 or # HM11143585 which are also confirmed to fit. These are all good options, so I recommend going with the best cost at that time of purchase.

  • Wiring Harness to Tow a Trailer with Brakes Using a 2012 Nissan NV2500
We have everything you need to get your 2012 Nissan NV2500 ready to tow a trailer but unfortunately there isn't a plug and play connector on your van for a brake controller. You also need to start with a 4-way, like part # HM11143585 that fits your van, before installing a 7-way. Once you have the 4-way use our # ETBC7 kit to convert it to the 7-way. The kit includes all of the wiring to connect a brake controller as well. I've linked a video of the kit being installed on an NV2500...
