Installation of TrailerMate Brake Controller Adapter

To install your electric brake controller, you need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain auto manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, wherein wiring is run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. When this is done, a port is installed at your dash so that you can easily plug in a brake controller.

Brake-Control Adapter Port

This adapter plugs into the port on your vehicle's built-in brake control wiring harness, which is located behind the dashboard. To reach the connector, you will have to remove the ashtray (A), the lower convenience panel (B), both lower switch panels (C), and the upper dash assembly (D). Use a trim panel puller to carefully pry these pieces out. The connector can be found behind this portion of your dashboard.

To hook this adapter up to your trailer brake controller, just connect the 4 wires of the harness - ground, power, brake switch, and brake power - to the corresponding wires on the brake controller. If your brake controller came with a plug built into its wiring harness, you will have to cut off the plug and connect to the wires themselves.

Video Transcript for TrailerMate Brake Controller TM75270 Review

Today we're looking at part number TM75270 from TrailerMate. This is a custom wiring adapter for your trailer brake controller. It's made specifically for the Ford Econoline Van and Ford F-250 through F-550 Super Duty Truck. You should use our fit guide to determine the model years that this works for to see if it works for your vehicle. This is a very easy way to install your brake controller. You simply plug the gray terminal here into the factory port that's underneath your dash and then you connect the copper wires here, the pigtail, into the back of your brake controller using the included butt connectors.

The copper is stranded type copper and that's top quality. Once you get it installed, if there's any slack in the wire you can use the included cable ties to take that up. This is compatible with both time delayed and proportional brake controllers made by TrailerMate, Draw-Tite, and Tekonsha. That's it for part number TM75270, the TrailerMate Custom Wiring Adapter.

  • Parts Needed to Tow a Trailer with Brakes with a 2015 F-550 Box Truck
For a 2" trailer hitch receiver on your 2015 Ford F-550 I recommend going with the Curt # C15445. This has a tongue weight rating of 2,550 lbs and a gross trailer weight rating of 17,000 lbs. If the weight capacity of your F-550 is lower than these ratings then you will be limited by the weight ratings of your F-550. Please note that if you have a box truck that sits further out at the rear you may have trouble using the receiver. If you don't already have a 4-Way Flat connector then you...
