What are the Differences Between Hitches 16310 and V70881
Question:
Looking at both the curt X5 adapter and the one made by Valley. Why does the valley one require extra bed supports, while the curt does not? Both are made to be installed on the B&W gooseneck hitch? Do these adapters damage the bed during towing? Thanks

According to my contact at Curt, the X5 does not require a support kit because it has the rails and attachments needed as part of the assembly. It sits flush with the bed so it does not need a separate subkit because the subkit is already installed. Also the rails on the Curt X5 Fifth Wheel Adapter for B&W Square Shank Turnover Ball Hitches, # 16310, have more openings for more 5th wheel installation options than the Valley B&W Gooseneck to Fifth Wheel Hitch Adapter Plate, # V70881. The Valley model needs kits, they are just separate and not built into the unit.
As far as damaging the bed, if they are installed correctly, you stay within the capacity of the hitch and your vehicle, and you have the minimum clearance above the bed (6 to 8 inches), then no damage should come to the vehicle when towing.
I have included links to the instructions for each of these hitches below.
