Cargo Box For 2013 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen That Wont Interfere With Tailgate Opening

Question:

Vehicle: 2013 Jetta SportWagen w/VW roof rails and crossbars What roof cargo carriers will work? Would prefer something that doesnt extend over the windshield and that allows the tailgate to be fully opened. Thanks.

There are 2 measurements you will want to take to see which cargo box will fit your 2013 Volkswagen Jetta SportsWagen so that it does not interfere with the tailgate when opened.

The first is the front clearance. You will need to measure the distance from the center of the front crossbar on your roof to the seam where the tailgate meets the roof. You then need to measure the distance between the crossbars measured center-to-center.

A cargo box I recommend is the Thule Force XT Rooftop Cargo Box, part # TH6358B. This 18 cubic foot cargo box requires a crossbar spread between 23-5/8 and 37-1/2 inches and needs 51-1/8 inches to allow the tailgate to open fully. You can get to the cargo from either side of your SportWagen with the dual-side-opening lid.

If you take these measurements and want to let me know what they are I will be happy to make some recommendations that will work for you.

I have attached a couple of charts that list the clearances needed for the Thule and the Yakima cargo boxes we offer. I have also attached a couple of product review videos for the cargo boxes I mentioned above you can check out.

You will want to check your owner's manual or with your dealership to make sure you do not exceed the roof weight capacity for your vehicle.
