How much less than the track to track distance do you cut the 2x4s to fit across a trailer? This may be a question for the community.

You ask a good question.
The Erickson E-Track Wood Beam Socket # 59149 fits in their E-Track (and in other similar cargo control tracks) such that about 1/4- to 1/2-inch of the space between the tracks themselves will be taken up by the socket connection point on each end. This can vary slightly depending on the age, degree of use and brand of the track and socket. So, in other words size your 2 x 4s to allow for about 1/2-inch to 3/4-inch less total length than there is between the tracks.
Ideally you'll want to test fit the sockets in your tracks to determine how much play there is in their fit; this will let you determine the appropriate length for your lumber.
