You're on the right track. You'd first need to install a T-1 connector like part # 118554, which will provide a 4-pole connector for the trailer lighting functions. To convert to a 7-way connector, you'd use the # 37185 adapter, which will plug into the 4-pole provided by the 118554 and provide you with both a 4-pole and a 7-way trailer connector. This is the way you'll want to go if your trailer is NOT equipped with electric brakes.
However, if your trailer has electric brakes, and you'd like them to be operational, you'll need to install a brake controller like the Tekonsha Prodigy P2, part # 90885. To install the controller, you'd use our Brake Controller Installation Kit, part # ETBC7. The kit includes the 37185 adapter I mentioned above, along with all the wire, hardware, circuit breakers and zip ties you'll need to complete your installation.
I'll link you to the installation instructions for the ETBC7 kit, as well as to an install video showing the install kit being used on a 2008 Liberty. The procedure will be the same on your vehicle.
