How to Determine Axle/Trailer Capacity on an Unknown Trailer with No Markings

Question:

I cant find anything identifying the trailer except the word Dilly on the fenders. Im having trouble because the axle doesnt actually go all the way across. The axle looking pieces are actually attached to a piece of metal that looks like a U that is upside down. I dont know the year, make or model of this trailer. The axle looking parts are 1 1/4inch in diameter. The u shaped metal is approximately the same size. It is a single axle trailer and the tires are 4.8/400-8 in size. According to this information, how much weight would this trailer pull/hold safely? I would surely appreciate your help! Thanks so much

This sounds like a small utility trailer or a kit trailer. In order to determine the capacity as best as I can I would need to know the inner and outer bearing numbers stamped into the metal of the bearings.

It is possible that there is a sticker or plate somewhere on the trailer indicating, among other things, the capacity of the trailer. Since it doesn't have a regular axle there is likely no marking on it but you will still want to look everywhere that you can for any identifying information.

I have included a picture that points out where the bearing numbers are. It also shows where you would measure the spindle if the bearing numbers cannot be found. Measurements should be taken using dial or digital calipers.

We can't go by the tire size for capacity but I can tell you that the 4.80/4.00-8 tires at most are rated for 760 pounds each for a load range C tire and up to 590 pounds each for a load range B.
