Transmission On 2013 Ford Escape Is Overheating When Being Flat-Towed

Question:

My friend tows his 2013 Ford Escape 6 cyl behind a RV. He has issues with the transmission fluid heating up while it is being towed. They dont tow anything with the Ford. Is there a transmission fluid temp sensor that can be remotely monitored from the RV? Is there something they can install that would cool the fluid while it is being towed?

I checked out the owner's manual for a 2013 Ford Escape and looked at the section about flat-towing, (recreational towing) in the manual.

Per the manual it states that it is not to be flat-towed or it would run the risk of damaging the transmission. This applies to both the 2-wheel drive and 4-wheel drive Escapes.

Installing a transmission cooler like part # D13502 would only help cool the transmission fluid when the engine is running and the fluid is moving through the system.

If the vehicle needs to be towed I recommend using a dolly so that all 4 wheels are off the ground when being transported. Sorry I cannot recommend any other solution, but because of the Escape design you do not want to run the risk of damaging or replacing the transmission. I do recommend you check with your dealership to see if there is any other resolution for you.
