How to Install a Brake Controller on a 2010 Chevrolet Silverado

Question:

I own a Draw-Tite Activator II brake controller which I had on a 2006 chevy silverado. It plugged in under the dash in the fuse panel and worked great. I now own a 2010 silverado, can I just plug this controller in as before under the dash or is there more to it? Thank you

You can definitely install the brake controller on the new truck, but there is a bit more to the installation of a brake controller on a 2010 Silverado. Instead of supplying a port for the brake controller to plug into, GM has provided a bundle of wires to hard wire the brake controller to. These wires are located under the dash, to the left side of the steering column. There is a white tag on the wires. The tag should tell you the wire functions, and they should be as follows.

Blue is the brake feed to the trailer connector at the back of the vehicle.
Black with a red tracer is the 12 volt battery supply to the brake controller.
Light Blue with white tracer is the stop light output circuit.
White is ground.

Make sure the tag says which wires to use for each function or use a circuit tester, item # 3808, and make sure that GM did not change the wire colors on your vehicle. Finally, splice the white wire on the brake controller to the ground wire, the red wire on the brake controller to the stop light output circuit, the blue wire to the brake feed wire, and the black wire to the 12V power wire on the vehicle.
