Expert Reply:

A 4.80 x 12 trailer tire fits on a 12 inch x 4 inch wheel, so I would guess that is the size of your wheel. The size of the wheel is important when choosing replacement tires. The highest capacity tire that we carry for a 12 inch x 4 inch wheel is the Kenda Karrier S-Trail ST145/R12 Load Range E Trailer Tire, # AM10140. This tire has a weight capacity of 1,520 lbs at 80 psi. Two of them would have a weight capacity of 3,040 lbs.

Keep in mind, increasing the weight carrying capacity of your tire will not necessarily increase the weight carrying capacity of your trailer. Your trailer will be limited by the lowest rated component between your tires, wheels, suspension and axle. I strongly recommend verifying the weight capacity of each of these components before loading your trailer. Your trailer should have an identification tag that lists the weight capacities. If the axle, suspension and wheels are all original, then that tag or the identification tag on the axle will give you a good idea of the weight capacity of the other components. The weight capacity of the wheels should also be stamped on the inside of the wheel.
