Brake Controller Recommendation for Towing Trailer Through the Mountains
Question:
Will a proportional brake controller apply the brakes going down a mountain? Are proportional or time delayed better for driving in mountains?

Expert Reply:
Most modern proportional brake controllers that use accelerometers and not a pendulum will not apply the brakes on steep grades unless you step on the brake pedal. The Voyager # 39510 does not have an accelerometer and requires manual leveling so I do not recommend it for mountains. I recommend the P2, # 90885, as the best option for mountain driving.
A time delay controller would not send any power back unless you stepped on the brake pedal or used the manual override. Because the amount of braking is fixed to where you set it, I would not recommend a time delay controller for mountain braking since you would have to constantly adjust it for the best braking performance. On a proportional controller like the P2 you would not have to worry about that.
