Weight Distribution for an RV on Ford F-550 Chassis Towing 9,000 Pound Car Trailer
Question:
I have a large super c RV on a ford f550 chassis so the suspension is quite stiff and the vehicle heavy about 18000 lb. Ill be towing a 9000 lb car trailer with a tw of 1000 lb. Will a weight distributing hitch be effective or should I just go with a simple ball mount?

The Ford F-550 chassis is up in the medium duty range but with the weight of the RV body on it and the tongue weight of the trailer at 1,000 pounds, you would likely still benefit from weight distribution. A good rule to go by is if the loaded trailer gross weight is at least 50 percent of the vehicle weight, or if the vehicle sags at the back when connected to a trailer, weight distribution is a good idea.
To choose a weight distribution system you will need to go by the total tongue weight of the set up. This is calculated by taking the tongue weight of the trailer, when loaded and ready to tow, and adding to that the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle.
I recommend a system rated for 800 to 1,500 pounds tongue weight, # RP66131. You would need to add a shank with the right rise or drop needed to tow the trailer level. I have included a link to the compatible shanks to the right. You will also need a ball, # C40008.
