Tekonsha P3 Brake Controller Recommendation to Replace a Time-Delayed Controller
Question:
I have a tandem axle utility trailer which weighs about 2400lbs empty. I have a time delayed brake controller for the brakes. Reese Towpower 74643 If I set the brake controller at 1.5 I feel like I need alittle more braking power and if i set the brake controller at 2.0 The back tires lock up and it smells like the brakes are burning. I also tested the voltage coming out of the brake controller at the controller and at the 7 pin harness and they are both correct. Ive read other posts about adjusting the brakes on the trailer and am wondering if that could be the problem? I have since ordered a proportional brake controller Tekonsha P3 because I seem to be towing more then I thought I would and based on other advice, a proportional brake controller sounded like the way to go. I have not hooked it up yet. I am hoping to resolve the brake problem on the trailer first. Thank you for your help

The Tekonsha P3 Brake Controller part # 90195 should fix your problem honestly. It sounds like your previous controller just wasn't flexible enough to give you the exact braking you needed.
The P3 should let you dial in your braking power much easier and would work a lot better than any time delayed controller out there. I would recommend you wait till after you install and setup the P3 before you start adjusting the brake assemblies of your trailer. Chances are they are just fine.
When adjusting brake assemblies the idea is to spin the wheel while tightening the assemblies until the wheel can't be turned by hand, and then backing 10 clicks off and you would be properly adjusted.
