Safety Chain Hook Replacement with a Larger Clevis Hook for a Class V Trailer Hitch

Question:

I have this hitch. The safety chain loops are way bigger than the factory hitch it replaced. I would rather just replace the ends on my chains, and not the whole chain w/hooks since on 2 of my trailer the the chains are permanently mounted to the trailer. What size hooks do you offer that will fit this hitch. I need some that will work with a 10k lb trailer, and a 5k lb trailer. I was looking at this # C81830 or something like this sized hook # FCHA0050324

I have a clevis hook that may work with your 5,000 lb trailer. Take a look at part # 6495-401-04. This hook has a working load limit up to 5,400 lbs and the pin that connects through the chain is 7/16 of an inch in diameter.

We have heavy-duty clevis hooks, but they have significantly higher weight capacities than you will need for your 10,000 lb trailer. The Curt Clevis Hook, # C81970, has a 40,000 lb weight capacity and the pin that connects through the chain is just over half of an inch (.52 inches) in diameter. This hook was designed for heavy-duty applications such as gooseneck trailers, but it may work with your trailer if the chains are large enough.

If the chains are not large enough for this clevis hook, then I recommend using the Draw-Tite Chain with Clevis Hook, # F63451, that you referenced. Any trailer shop or fabrication shop should be able to replace the safety chains fairly easily and inexpensively. This part number is for one chain, you would need two of them.
