Can the Shank of Brophy Hitch Adapter # HTAD Be Drilled Out from 1/2-Inch to 5/8-Inch
Question:
Can the 1/2 inch pin hole on the solid shank be drilled out to 5/8 inches? This would be used only to carry two bikes on a hitch mounted rack.

Helpful Expert Reply:
The Brophy Hitch Adapter # HTAD cannot safely be modified to increase the size of the hitch pin hole. All hitch accessories intended for use with 1-1/4-inch hitches use a 1/2-inch pin size. Pins of 5/8-inch are employed for 2-inch and larger hitch receivers.
If you were to drill out the solid shank to enlarge the hole you would be altering the adapter's capacity by some unknown value and this could potentially lead to unsafe conditions.
