Trailer Brakes Not Working on Cattle Trailer With 6-Way Connection on a 2005 Dodge Ram Pickup
Question:
I hooked up the brake box to my 2005 Dodge ram. When I plug it up to my trailer everything works except my brakes. I took it to a friend and hooked it up to his trailer and it worked. It has to be in my trailer. The trailer worked with my ford.

If the trailer brake circuit is working on your truck, and the trailer brakes worked with your previous vehicle, then the problem must be with the connector or adapter being used between the truck and the trailer. 6-Way cannectors and adapters are wired two different ways. The first way is with the brake feed in the center position and the second way is with the power wire in the center position.
If you have a 6-Way connector at the rear of your Dodge then you should check the connections with a circuit tester, item # PTW2993, and see which connection your brake feed, from the brake controller, is connected to. Next, check which connection on the trailer connector has the wire coming from the trailer brake magnets connected to it. If the connections do not line up, then you will need to change the wiring on either the vehicle or the trailer to work together.
If you have a 7-Way connector at the rear of the Dodge and you are using an adapter between the vehicle and trailer connectors, the adapter may be wired wrong. If the brake feed is wired to the center pin on the adapter, then you would need to make sure the brake feed on the vehicle goes to the center output on the adapter. If your adapter cannot be rewired then you can use the Adapter 7 Pole to 6 Pole - Universal, item # 47549, which can be easily rewired correctly for your trailer.
If none of these suggestions work, then I would start by checking the wiring to the trailer brake magnets and the grounds on the trailer. If these connections are good, then I would check the trailer brakes and magnets themselves. If the windings in the trailer brake magnets are showing through, then the magnets will need to be replaced.
