Function Of Vehicle to Vehicle Taillight Converter # 118158 When Towing Vehicle With Separate Wiring
Question:
Im a confused about how trailer wiring works. I have an 1984 newell coach that has a turn signal light, a tail light and a brake light. Im wanting to flat tow a 2013 ford explorer which has a separate turn signal, tail and a brake. I called and customer service said my coach is actually combined at the plug so I need to wire a combined motor home to separate towed vehicle. So here is my questions: 1. The instructions they sent me with the part number 154-792-118158 does not show using a 118158 on a combined rv to a separate tow vehicle, but the supplemental instructions that were emailed to me link - http://www.etrailer.com/Tow-Bar-Wiring/Ford/Explorer/2012/154-792-118158.html?vehicleid=20121129911 - shows me using the 118158. 2. I dont understand how a turn signal and brake wire can share the same wire. When I have the brakes on and a turn signal on both on rv and explorer the brake lights stay on while the turn signal blinks so how can they combine these wires into one wire and still have the lights work that way. I dont understand after I hook the 118158, which from what I read is a 3-to-2 converter works. I understand basic wiring and can install remote starts on vehicles with a data bus wire which one wire can lock doors, unlock doors, pop trunk but this is done with resistance to operate different functions but they dont all operate at the same time. I apologize if this is a dumb question, but it sure seems like I would need a 5 wire harness, which would be left turn, right turn, brake light, tail light, ground. They said my rv already has a 3-to-2 installed so how can I connect a 4 wire plug which carries left/stop, right/stop, tail and ground to my explorer and still get the explorer to have brake lights, turn signals and tail lights. Thank you in advance for trying to explain this to me.

The instructions that are included with the Roadmaster 6-Diode Universal Wiring Kit, part # 154-792-118158, detail how to wire a separate towed vehicle from a separate motorhome. The # 118158 instructions show how to wire the converter that takes the combined signal from the motorhome and when it senses the pulse from the turn signal being used, sends that signal to the wire for the turn signal out of the converter and attached to the appropriate wire on the trailer.
I have attached a link to the product review for the # 118158 you can check out.
