Using Andersen Adapter # AM3100 With Safety Chains # AM3109 on 2009 Chevy HD 2500 Short Bed

Question:

I have just bought a 2014 Heartland Bighorn 3070rl which states it comes with the Patented 88 degree turning radius even for short bed trucks. I have a BandW gooseneck turnover ball system in my 2009 Chevy HD2500 4x4 with the 66inch short bed. Do you have any information showing which of these models would be best for my setup?

The two parts you referenced, the Andersen Universal 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Coupler Adapter # AM3100 and the Safety Chains # AM3109, are intended to be used together. It is not a one or the other situation. The safety chains # AM3109 alone are NOT a coupler to mate your 5th wheel with your goose neck hitch.

5th wheel to goose neck adapters come in several varieties as outlined in the linked article. Some will place more stress on the hitch and trailer frame. The adapter # AM3100 is a type that is suitable for short-distance or occasional use, but for long-term safety and long trips you will be better off with one of the other types detailed in the article. At the very least you may want to consider a coupler with offset, to provide more turning clearance, such as the Universal 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Coupler Adapter With 8-Inch Offset # AM3139. The safety chains could be used along with either of these.
