Weight Distribution and Brake Controller for 2009 Ford F-150 Towing a 2014 Jayco Jay Flight Swift

Question:

2014 jayco jay flight swift 264 BH I am looking to purchase the above trailer. Using a 2009 Ford F150. The tongue weight of the trailer is 485 lbs. I need a hitch and a trailer brake controller. I think I need Hitch Pro-series PS49582. and trailer brake controller TEKONSHA Prodigy P2 90885. and harness 22292. The video on the installation of the controller seems straight forward, and was wondering if I needed to take my truck to the dealership after installation to program it. I dont think so, since the video didnt say I had too, but just making sure.

To choose a weight distribution system you will need to go by the total tongue weight of the set up. This is calculated by taking the tongue weight of the trailer, when loaded and ready to tow, and adding to that the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle.

Weight distribution system # PS49901 is rated for up to 550 pounds tongue weight. As long as the total tongue weight is under that you can use this system. If it is close to or exceeds 550 pounds then you would want to step up to the next highest system, # PS49582, rated for 550 to 750 pounds tongue weight.

I have included a link to the installation instructions for you. You will need to make sure the frame is clear on the trailer from 27-1/4 inches to 32-3/4 inches back from the center of the ball coupler for the lift brackets on the system.

I have included some helpful links on determining tongue weight and weight distribution and sway control for you.

The P2 # 90885 is an excellent choice for a brake controller. If your 2009 Ford F-150 came with a factory installed 7-Way trailer connector then you would need harness # 22292 to install the controller. If the truck came with a 4-Way flat then you would still use the same harness but you would also need to install a 7-Way using # 37185.

Then you would also need enough wire # 10-1-1 to go from the blue wire on # 37185 to the blue wire in the adapter # 22292. You would cut the blue wire at the end of the harness that plugs into truck and attach it directly to the # 10-1-1 wire you ran from the 7-Way blue wire.

With a 7-Way or not you would not have to have the truck reprogrammed.
