Should the Trailer be Level When Setting Up a Weight Distribution System

Question:

I have installed the weight distribution system or trying to. My measurements in front of truck are only 1/4inch difference empty with trl hooked up. Rear is 2inch lower but the trailer is not level and I have 6 links on chains. Should trl be level and can I turn ball hitch over and possibly get the trl more level when towing. Any advice will be appreciated.

It is important for the trailer to be level when using weight distribution. To determine the proper ball height for the hitch ball, you want the trailer to be level. The hitch ball should be about 1 inch taller than the top of trailer coupler when the trailer is level. Most weight distribution shanks can be used in the rise or drop position, but without knowing which weight distribution system you have, I cannot say for sure if your shank is capable of being used in both positions. Your installation instructions should contain that information.

With the trailer level and the hitch ball at the proper height, it will be easier to determine if the spring bars have enough tension to distribute the weight. Everything should be pretty close to level if the system is set up properly. You will also want to make sure your spring bars are rated high enough for your total tongue weight. Keep in mind, a weight distribution system has to support the loaded and ready to tow tongue weight of your trailer plus the weight of any cargo in the tow vehicle loaded behind the rear axle.
