Hi Laura; thanks for the question and per the owner's manual your 2011 Ford Escape can be flat towed - including one with an automatic transmission. There are a number of parts needed in order to flat tow the '11 Escape, which I'll list for you:
- Blue Ox Base Plate Kit # BX2605
- Tow Bar: etrailer SD Non-Binding Tow Bar for Blue Ox Base Plates # e47ZR
- Wiring Kit: Roadmaster Wiring Kit # RM-15267
- Roadmaster Brake-Lite Relay Kit for Towed Vehicles # RM-88400
- Brake Buddy Classic 3 Portable Flat Tow Brake System # HM39494
Blue Ox has a deserved reputation for quality and will help your Escape keep a nice, clean look when you aren't towing it due to the base plate's removable arms. The tow bar has a 6,000 lb capacity, which is well over what your Escape weighs, and even comes with safety cables so you don't have to purchase those separately.
I really like the Flexo-Coil wiring kit because it is designed to prevent any type of electrical feedback, keeping your electrical system safe, and the brake light relay is needed to ensure that your Escape's turn signals flash in tandem with your motorhome's lights. As for the braking system, the Brake Buddy is nice because it allows you to set the braking power you want, and isn't a one-and-done install. So if you ever decide to change what car you're flat towing, you can still use the Brake Buddy.
