Recommended Brake Controller and Wiring Adapter for a 2015 Chevy Traverse w/ the Factory Tow Package

Question:

Hello etrailer.com Have a 2015 Chevy Traverse. The vehicle was purchased trailer ready. Have been getting conflicting information regarding the cable adapter for a Tekonsha remote brake unit installation. Have seen info that the vehicle DOES have a plug in receptacle for the adapter cable. Have also seen videos showing tape covered wiring in the drivers side kick panel. Would obviously be easier for me if there was a place to plug in the adapter cable. In addition, I see a lot of recommendations for the Tekonsha P3 brake controller. Dont feel I need such an elaborate controller for a trailer that will only be used 2-4 times per year. Understand theres also a Tekonsha P2 controller as well as Tekonsha Primus IQ. Can you provide any reason to purchase something more involved/expensive than the Pimus IQ? Thanking you in advance for a prompt response and appreciate whatever info you can provide.

Hello Carl! Your 2015 Chevy Traverse does indeed come with a port to plug in a brake controller so long as you have the factory tow package. You mentioned it being tow ready so I wanted to clarify that as long as your Traverse came from the factory with a 7-way harness you'll have the necessary port. I have attached a picture below that will show you exactly where to find the port.

As far as using the Tekonsha Primus IQ Trailer Brake Controller item # TK90160, I currently have this one in my work truck and I use it infrequently with positive results. If you're only going to be using it a few times a year this controller will definitely handle your needs and last awhile. I've had mine over 12 years and never experienced any issues.

To install it without having to cut or splice wires you'll want to use the Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers item # 3026-P. This will work with all Tekonsha brake controllers so if you do decide to go with the P3 item # 90195 you'll still want this one.

Hello Heather...thank you for your prompt response. Looks like there's (3) screws to remove in the plastic cover under the steering wheel...and the trailer brake controller plug in "port" is back there. I can't tell from your photo if that's an actual receptacle or a wire pigtail? To be honest, haven't been able to take the car apart to see. Thanks again for the great service. Carl B.
