Opening and Closing Hatch of VW GTI With Trunk Mounted Bike Rack in Place

Question:

i have a 2012 vw gti that i am needing to get a hatch mount bike rack for. are there any makes of hatch mount that will allow you to open the hatch on my gti without removing the rack? thanks in advance

There are no trunk mounted bike racks that would allow you to open the hatch with the rack in place. Having the rack in place would add additional weight that the gas struts that hold the hatch open might not be rated for. The extra weight could cause the hatch to unexpectedly slam shut, likely causing injury. Also, shutting the hatch with the rack in place can damage the painted surface of the hatch or the rear glass.

Since the rack needs to be removed to access the hatch, using a rack that's very easy to install and remove is important. The Thule OutWay, part # TH45JV for a 2 bike or # TH56BV for a 3 bike version doesn't get any simpler to install. Instead of the 6 straps with buckles arrangement most other racks use, the OutWay uses 2 rubber coated straps that make installation quick and easy. If you'll be carrying women's bikes or bikes with a sharply angled top tube, using a frame adapter bar like part # 64005 is recommended. The adapter bar spans the distance between the seat post and the handlebar gooseneck, and provides a level attachment point to maximize the bike's ground clearance.
