Are There Any Issues With Going With Larger, Wider Wheels And Tires?

Question:

Hello, I currently has a 2021 Flagstaff trailer with 3900 lb. Dexter axles with Goodyear Endurance 205/75r/15 tires on Lionshead 15x5-4.5 alloy wheels that are 5inch wide. I wish to change to an E rated tire which from my research requires a 6inch wide rim. Are there any issues going to the deeper 6inch rim with same specs as listed above, so that I can change to the larger and wider tire? My spacing is 3.5 inches between dual tires and 4inch from top of tire to bottom of wheel well.

It certainly could be possible to go with a deeper 6" rim. The main factor we need to consider is the distance between the inside of the tire and the frame. A wider tire/wheel will sit closer to the frame on the inside, and we want to be sure there is no risk of anything touching or rubbing as the suspension moves. Our rule of thumb is that you want at least 1" between the tire and the frame.

As far as wheel well clearance, our rule of thumb is at least 3", so with 4" of clearance currently, you will have a bit of room for bigger tires. It really will come down to how much space you have inside the tire with the current 205/75-15 tires and 15x5" rims, and how much room you have to spare. If upgrading the tires/wheels leaves you with 1" or more between the inside of the tire and the frame, then you will be good to go.
