Troubleshooting Sloppy Play With A Curt Hitch Ball In A GM OEM Puck System

Question:

I have a Silverado 2500 HD 2022 model diesel with factory installed Curt gooseneck puck system. When I tow our 8000 lb RV. I get a loud banging noise when braking. Chevrolet has checked it out and said theres nothing wrong. It seems to me that the ball is too loose in the socket. I have tried a new ball and that resulted in the same noise and loose fit as well. Do you have any suggestions to reduce that noise. It is loud enough that I used to stop to see if something was broken each time I breaked.

Your issue is actually pretty common and has been written off as normal by GM so a warranty replacement likely won't be an option. There's quite a few forums where others with this puck system have switched over to the B&W Ball and Safety Chain Kit # BWGNXA2061 to eliminate the clunking noise.

The locking handle on this hitch ball will make installation and removal easier. Most hitch balls have the lock mechanism in the ball which leads to it getting broken over time as it rattles in the gooseneck coupler or gets hit when coupling to the trailer and then you can't get your ball out. With this handle being out of the way you'll completely avoid this issue.
