Can Vehicle Wiring Harness Be Connected to 12V Accessory Outlet for Power on 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe
Question:
I have a 12 volt Accessory outlet in the RR side panel cigar lighter plug. Can I use THAT power outlet for the 12 volt converter supply instead of running all the way up front to the battery? The outlets are on a 25 amp fuse and the wiring is rated at no more than a 10 amp draw on each outlet. So, would not 10 amps be more than enough to power the taillight converter. I know it depends on how many lights the tow trailer has, but I doubt that clearance and turn\stop lights would pull more than 10 amps. Does the powered converter supply ALL the power to the trailers lights or just supplement the power needed to prevent the Sante Fe wiring system from being overloaded.

The Curt Vehicle Wiring Harness, # C56184, has a powered converter which isolates all of the power draw to the black power wire. This power wire must be connected directly to the battery in order to safe guard the vehicle's electrical system. When the wiring harness is wired according to the installation instructions, the vehicle's wiring system will not be exposed or put in jeopardy in the event of a short in the trailer's wiring or lighting. If you were to tie into the 12V accessory plug it would defeat the purpose of a separate power wire and is not recommended.
I have attached a FAQ article which may be of help to you when routing the power wire.
It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections including plugs and the 4-pole connector itself. Dielectirc Grease, # 11755, helps to prevent electrical failures caused by corrosion and moisture.
