First we will want to determine if there is a short in the Pigtail # C51322 for the Curt Venturer # C74VV which is causing the brake lights to be activated on your 2002 Ford F-150. Obviously unplugging the pigtail from the truck side connector should cause the lights to return to normal activation if there is a short or damage to either the controller or pigtail. If you unplug just the controller side of the pigtail and the brake lights continue to be active then you know there is a short in the pigtail which will need to be corrected or replaced.
If you verify the issue is the controller you will want to contact Curt to begin the warranty process as power should only ever come in on the red wire from the vehicle and never flow back to the vehicle from the controller.
