Commander Brake Controllers Green light is On Without Trailer Connected
Question:
I have a Commander brake controller and just noticed that the green light is staying on after I disconnect my trailer. It never did thatto my knowledge before tonight. Have I developed an issue or is the light supposed to be on even with no trailer attached.

It sounds to me as if you have a short on your brake feed to the trailer connector. Check the blue wire going to the trailer connector at the back of the vehicle to see if it is shorted. The easiest way to be sure the wire is not shorted is to cut the blue brake feed wire about 4 to 6 inches behind the controller. If the light on the controller goes off the blue wire is shorted somewhere and will need to be fixed or replaced. If the green light stays on, when the blue wire is cut, then there is a problem in the brake controller. Brake controllers have no internal user serviceable parts so in this case the controller would need to be replaced.
If you need to replace the controller I would recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Brake Controller # 90885. It can be installed with wiring adapter, # 3035-P. The Prodigy P2 is our most popular brake controller, and is very easy to use and set-up. If your brake controller is hard wired you can order the P2 individually, as item # 90885, and the hard wire adapter is included.
I will provide a link to the instructions for the P2, as well as links to our Brake Controller Install Guide as well as a FAQ page that has additional information about brake controllers that you might find helpful.
