You will need to do a little checking with a circuit tester, item # 3808 if needed. Your Dakota has the 7-way connector so check the center pin, you should find that it is connected to the backup light circuit. Be careful when checking this connection, use the emergency brake and have someone in the vehicle holding the brake pedal so there is no chance of an accident. If the factory 7-way connector is working properly then the Adapter 7 Pole to 5 Pole Flat, item # A75TB, will work for you. The adapter will provide the 5 pole connection with the back-up circuit to lock out hydraulic surge breaks or power reverse lighting.

If you find that the center pin of your connector is not connected to the backup light circuit then you will need to find the correct wire for the center pin behind the connector on the vehicle and wire it to the backup light circuit behind one of the vehicle taillights. Use a circuit tester to be sure and get the correct wires needed. You will then be able to use the adapter mentioned.
