I spoke with my contact at Rackem about the information you requested for the Double Barrel Trailer Tailgate Assist, # RA-27C. The chain that attaches to the tailgate bracket is chrome plated steel. The internal chain and spring are not plated because they are stored in the tailgate assist housing and will not be exposed to the elements very much and the main housing is painted steel, not baked enamel.
The only lubrication that Rackem recommends is occasionally applying an oil style lubricant to the chains from time to time. He told me that they installed the Double Barrel on a trailer 7 years ago when it came out and it works as good as it did when it was new and has not had to be lubricated once. There are no external lubrication ports so the lubricant would be applied directly to the chain.
