Troubleshooting Interior and Exterior Horse Trailer Lights When Hooked Up to 2020 Ram 1500

Question:

I have a 2020 Dodge Ram 1500 Larime Truck. Hooked up a brand new Trails West horse trailer with a 7 pin connector cord to my truck. Interior lights in horse compartment and exterior LED lights DO NOT WORK. All other lights i.e brake lights, back-up lights, turn signal lights, and running lights work. Any suggestions on how to get the lights to work? Thank you

Expert Reply:

For your situation either your 2020 Ram 1500 isn't sending power through the 7-Way connector, or your horse trailer wiring isn't working correctly for that 12V power.

The easiest way to tell which end is the issue is to test the 12V power pin on your truck to see if there is power there (see attached). If you aren't seeing power then you likely need to check your fuse for that function, but if you are seeing power then that means there is a fuse or some wiring that needs to be checked on your trailer - it might even be a master switch to keep those lights from accidentally draining the battery.

If you don't have a tester for your truck I recommend either getting a probe style like the part # PTW2993 or a plug-in style like the Pollak # PK12741.
