Recommended Flat Towing Components For A 1999 Jeep Wrangler TJ

Question:

Hi, I have a 1999 Jeep Wrangler TJ that I want to put an off road front bumper on, but I need to be able to flat tow behind my motorhome. Can you please help me find a bumper I like the Smittybuilt with winch and a list of the equipment I need to flat tow? Thank you,

Unfortunately We don't carry replacement bumpers like you're wanting so you would need to contact SmittyBilt directly to get a bumper that's rated for flat towing and would have D-Rings that are capable of being flat-towed from. The suppliers we have for baseplates haven't verified every single bumper will fit with the way the baseplates mount so a D-Ring setup would end up being a much safer choice with no room for error.

From there we have Roadmaster D-Ring adapters that can connect to either a 3/4" thick D-Ring # RM-035 or a 1" thick D-Ring # RM-035-1.

Next you'll need a compatible Roadmaster tow bar like the Falcon All Terrain # RM-522. This tow bar along with some safety cables like the Roadmaster 80" Hybrid Coiled-to-Straight Safety Cables # RM-674. These have a straight portion that can slip through the channels in the tow bar and will complete your physical connection between the Jeep and motorhome.

To transfer your motorhome's traffic signals through to your Jeep and remain street legal you'll want to use the Roadmaster Diode 7-Wire to 6-Wire Flexo-Coil Wiring Kit # RM-15267. This kit will splice into your Jeep's tail light wiring to display the signals through the tail lights of the Jeep for a one-time installation.

In most states it is required to also use a supplemental braking system to help control the towed vehicle and prevent an accident so I recommend going with the Brake Buddy Select 3 Portable Supplemental Braking System # HM39524. This portable system can be easily setup in just a few minutes and can be swapped around to multiple vehicles if you ever plan on towing something else. It also includes a charge line kit for the vehicle to help keep the battery charged while you tow it.
