Troubleshooting Brakes Not Working Properly Using Hayes Air Actuated Brake Controller
Question:
I had this air brake controller installed and the dial is not working to adjust the pressure to the trailer and it’s causing the brakes on the trailer to lock up. Also it does not work if you try to manually energize the brakes. Can you provide any assistance? Thanks

Start by making sure the ground connection is secure. Assuming it is, I would check the power on the brake controller with a circuit tester like the # PTW2993. I'm guessing it lights up but you can still make sure it is getting enough power by testing the black wire running to it.
Once that is done, check for power on the blue brake output wire exiting the controller while using the manual override. If there is no power here it is likely an internal issue. I would contact Hayes to see about a replacement under warranty since it sounds like you just got it.
If you do have power here it is likely a short in the wiring. Check your connection for power to verify it is on the vehicle side and not the trailer side. You can replace the brake output wire with the # 10-1-1 if needed but realistically I would take it back to whoever installed it and tell them to fix it unless it is the wiring on the trailer.
