Why Might Used Reese 16k Fifth Wheel Hitch Have Stubborn Latch Mechanism

Question:

I bought a used Reese 16K 5th wheel hitch. After having it installed, when I backed up to the kingpin it would not latch until I got out of the truck and manually bumped the lever with my hand. Any idea why?

Since the hitch is used I would make sure the latching mechanism is greased as well as just go over it all to make sure nothing is worn out or possibly bent. I don't know exactly which Reese 16k hitch you have so it's hard to get more specific than that but I would suspect the hitch being used and possibly not maintained/cleaned/greased is the reason the latching mechanism is a little stubborn.
