Troubleshooting Brake Controller that Shows Intermittent Voltage on Display
Question:
I purchased the universal brake kit #ETBC7 and installed it on my 2015 Honda Odyssey 2 years ago. It has worked fine up until now. The display usually show 5.2 or 5.3 on the when the brake pedal is depressed. Today as I was driving, the display did illuminate when the brake was pressed, however as Im I release the brake pedal and am continuing down the road, the display is blinking the 5.2/5.3. Is this an indicator that the brake unit is applying an electrical impulse to the trailer brake? Is this an indicator that something is malfunctioning in the system? Your help would be greatly appreciated

Expert Reply:
It could be either corrosion on your trailer wiring connector, a bad brake controller, or a combination of the two. First thing to check is to try cleaning off the pins of your 7-way with sandpaper as corrosion notoriously causes false brake controller connection issues like what you described. If that does not fix it try unplugging and plugging back in your brake controller. Sometime a hard reset fixes bugs. If not it would be time for a new controller like the very reliable P2 part # 90885.
